Months after Tamil Nadu elected actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay as Chief Minister, speculation is growing over whether another popular film star could make the transition from cinema to politics. Actor Dhanush, who has made a mark in Tamil, Hindi and international cinema, has triggered fresh discussions in the state about a possible political entry.

Tamil Nadu has a long history of film personalities entering politics, from M G Ramachandran (MGR) to Vijay. Against this backdrop, Dhanush’s recent public appearances, fan-club activities and welfare initiatives have prompted questions about whether he, too, is considering a political career after more than two decades in the film industry.

But what has fuelled the speculation? And has Dhanush given any indication that he plans to enter politics? Here’s a closer look.

Why is Dhanush’s political entry being discussed again?

Speculation about Dhanush’s political ambitions gained momentum after his remarks at the audio launch of his upcoming film, OM – Chapter 1: Udhiram – The Blood Wood, held in Chennai on November 6.

Responding to rumours that the BJP or other political figures were backing him, Dhanush said that no particular individual or organisation was directing his decisions. He said:

“Several rumours are being spread about me, with claims that certain people are behind me and others are on my side. God is directing me; my fans are behind me and the people are by my side.”

His co-star Sai Pallavi also referred to Vijay’s entry into politics during her speech at the event. She expressed the hope that Dhanush would continue acting, saying:

“Vijay sir has entered politics, but I hope and pray that Dhanush sir continues acting. Because, he is such a realistic performer. Whatever you do sir, I will always support you.”

She added that if Dhanush chose to follow Vijay into politics, audiences would miss his performances on screen.

Videos of their speeches circulated widely on social media, adding to the discussion about the actor’s possible political plans. However, Dhanush has not made any announcement about entering politics.

Dhanush plans air-conditioned tuition centres in Tamil Nadu

Another development that has drawn attention is Dhanush’s announcement that he plans to establish four air-conditioned tuition centres for students in Tamil Nadu.

At the OM audio launch, the actor said three centres would be set up in Chennai and one in Kanyakumari. He also spoke about expanding the initiative to all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state by 2027.

The announcement has added to speculation about his growing interest in public welfare activities. During the event, Dhanush also spoke about the responsibilities of his fans, urging them to look after their families and help people affected by floods during the rainy season.

His remarks, which focused on social responsibility and public service, prompted some observers to draw parallels with the outreach activities of actors who later entered politics.

Rumours about Dhanush-BJP link

On October 25, Dhanush held a meeting with members of the women’s wing of his fan association at a private college in Chennai. He interacted with supporters and presented them with silver lamps as gifts.

The lamps carried a lotus design, prompting speculation about a possible political connection with the BJP, whose election symbol is the lotus. However, the Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam clarified that the lotus was the manufacturer’s mark on the lamps and did not signify any political association.

The meeting also drew political reactions. Congress leader Manickam Tagore criticised what he described as the BJP’s attempt to bring another actor into politics, a remark that was widely linked to speculation surrounding Dhanush.

There have also been reports alleging that Dhanush met BJP leaders during a visit to Delhi. Separately, reports suggested that the AIADMK, under Edappadi K Palaniswami, had invited the actor to join the party. These claims have added to the political buzz, but Dhanush has not confirmed any such discussions or political understanding.

Dhanush Welfare Movement and fan-club activities

Dhanush’s decision to reorganise his fan club has also contributed to the speculation. The actor’s fan association was renamed the ‘Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam’, or ‘Dhanush Welfare Movement’, and a new flag and logo were introduced.

The flag features a red star at the centre, surrounded by a red-and-white border. It also carries an image of Dhanush with his hands folded in greeting, alongside the Tamil phrase ‘Ennampol Than Vaazhkai’ (Your life reflects your thoughts).

However, director Subramaniam Siva, who is associated with the fan organisation, said the flag had been in use for more than a decade, countering suggestions that it was introduced as part of a new political initiative.

Reports also indicate that Dhanush’s fan network has been involved in welfare activities and interactions with supporters since 2025.

Films dealing with caste, unemployment and education

Some of Dhanush’s films have explored social and political issues, prompting discussions about the themes he chooses to portray. However, the subjects of an actor’s films do not necessarily indicate political ambitions.

In Velaiilla Pattadhari (2014), he played an unemployed engineering graduate struggling to find a job. Asuran (2019) and Karnan (2021) explored caste discrimination, social injustice, and the struggles of oppressed communities.

Other films, including Kodi (2016), Vada Chennai (2018), Vaathi (2023) and Jagame Thandhiram (2021), also dealt with political, social and economic themes.

Dhanush’s speeches during film promotions have occasionally attracted attention for their articulation and observations on society. Some of his supporters and observers have interpreted these remarks as signs of a wider public role. However, his film choices and public statements alone cannot establish that he intends to enter electoral politics.

Is Dhanush’s white attire a political signal?

Dhanush’s choice of white outfits for several public appearances has also become part of the speculation. From film promotions, including events for OM, to his son’s graduation ceremony, the actor has been seen wearing white shirts and dhotis.

In Tamil Nadu, white attire is commonly associated with political leaders and public figures. This has led some observers to interpret Dhanush’s style choices as a possible indication of political ambitions.

However, clothing choices and public appearances are not evidence of a political decision.

Dhanush’s recent activities have inevitably drawn comparisons with Vijay, who moved from cinema to politics and became Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister. The state has also seen several actors, including MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sarath Kumar, attempt political careers with varying degrees of success.

For now, however, Dhanush has not announced the launch of a political party or confirmed plans to contest elections. Whether the actor eventually enters politics remains an open question. Until he makes an official announcement, his fan-club activities, welfare initiatives and public appearances will continue to be viewed through the lens of speculation, even as his immediate focus remains on cinema.
